All Love Starts with Self-Love: How to Build a Healthier Relationship with Fitness

Writer: Jess TakimotoJess Takimoto

Summary

February is here, love is in the air, and while many conversations revolve around relationships, I want to talk about my favorite kind of love—self-love.

At SHINE FIT, we have a saying: All love starts with self-love. And when it comes to fitness, food, and body image, this is more important than ever.

The Overachiever's Struggle with Self-Worth

So many women in our community are high achievers, perfectionists, and people-pleasers. They’re incredibly successful in their careers, dedicated to their families, and always showing up for others. But when it comes to themselves? They’re last on their own priority list.

For years, they’ve used external accomplishments—job titles, degrees, promotions, and even the way their body looks—as validation for their worth. And when that mindset gets applied to fitness, it often leads to self-criticism, punishment, and burnout.

And I know this…because that was me, too.

SHINE FIT didn’t just transform the lives of over 1,500 women—it first fixed a problem I had in my own life.

How Perfectionism Can Destroy Your Relationship with Fitness

Many women take the same hustle, grind, work-harder mentality that made them successful in their careers and apply it to fitness.

🚩 They punish themselves for missing a workout.

🚩 They hyper-focus on numbers, calories, and results.

🚩 They feel guilt for eating certain foods.

It becomes a constant inner battle—because no amount of external success can make up for the way you talk to yourself.

You wouldn't tolerate a friend, partner, or boss constantly criticizing, shaming, or guilt-tripping you—so why do you accept it from yourself?

The truth is, your relationship with fitness is just like any other relationship in your life.

If it’s built on manipulation, shame, or punishment, it’s toxic.

If it’s built on kindness, patience, and grace, it becomes something that truly supports you.

Are You in a Toxic Relationship with Fitness?

Think about how you approach exercise, food, and your body.

Would you accept these behaviours in a relationship with someone else?

Guilt-tripping – "You have to work out today or else…"

Bribery – "If you don’t exercise, you don’t deserve to eat this."

Criticism – "You look so [insert insult]. You’re not good enough."

If you wouldn’t tolerate this from a partner, why are you tolerating it from yourself?

This is where self-love comes in—not the bubble-bath, spa-day kind (though those are great), but true self-respect.

It’s about raising your standards for how you treat yourself.

How to Build a Healthy Relationship with Fitness

✔️ Give yourself permission – You are allowed to enjoy exercise. You are allowed to eat food without guilt. You are allowed to like your body as it is right now.

✔️ Change the way you speak to yourself – If you wouldn't say it to a best friend, don’t say it to yourself.

✔️ Demand better for yourself – Just like you set boundaries in relationships, set them with yourself. No more shaming, punishing, or guilt-tripping.

✔️ Surround yourself with people who lift you up – The people around you shape your mindset. If you’re surrounded by negativity, criticism, or toxic diet talk, it’s time to find a new environment—one that empowers you.

✔️ Focus on how fitness makes you feel—not just how it makes you look – Confidence isn’t built through self-hate. It’s built through movement, community, and shifting your mindset.
