A Little Bit About Naomi

Naomi has been part of the SHINE community for almost two years, and her story is a perfect example of how fitness can be a transformative tool, not just for the body, but for the mind. She lives in Toronto and is a passionate grade three and four teacher. Naomi's journey with fitness has been a mix of dance, perfectionism, and a constant drive for self-improvement—traits that follow her through everything in life, from her career to her personal fitness goals.

What Was Naomi’s Relationship with Fitness Before SHINE?

Before finding SHINE, Naomi had a somewhat complicated relationship with fitness. She grew up dancing, which instilled in her a sense of perfectionism that often translated into an “all or nothing” mindset. If she missed a workout or couldn’t perform a move just right, she’d feel like it was game over. She explains, “I would get so frustrated if I messed up one day. It was like, if it wasn’t 100%, it was nothing.”

This mindset wasn’t just limited to fitness—Naomi carried the same perfectionism into other aspects of her life. It made maintaining consistency in her routine challenging, and she often found herself overwhelmed by her own expectations.

The Turning Point: Discovering SHINE

Naomi’s turning point came when her friend Maya recommended she try SHINE. Despite her initial skepticism, Naomi soon discovered that SHINE was more than just a fitness class—it was a community. She recalls her first class: “I walked in, and I thought, ‘Oh, this is really hard.’ But I kept coming back.

It wasn’t just the workout that drew Naomi in; it was the welcoming, supportive atmosphere of SHINE. It allowed her to let go of the rigid expectations she had set for herself and start enjoying fitness in a way she had never experienced before. It was a shift from trying to be perfect to simply having fun and showing up for herself.

How SHINE Changed Naomi's Confidence

Since joining SHINE, Naomi has experienced a profound shift in her mindset and confidence. She’s learned to let go of her perfectionism and embrace the idea that it’s okay to miss a workout or not be perfect every time. Naomi now views her fitness routine as something she enjoys and looks forward to, rather than something she has to force herself into.

I don’t have that anxiety anymore about missing a workout. It’s like, if I need a rest day, I take it. I know I can always come back,” Naomi shares. This new perspective has not only helped her stick with fitness but also allowed her to feel more at ease with her body and her self-image.

From Perfectionism to Self-Compassion

Naomi has also learned to quiet her inner critic. She now feels more confident in her own skin and doesn’t feel the need to constantly seek external validation. “Before, I always thought I was confident outwardly, but inwardly, I was second-guessing myself. Now, I feel like the confidence I show on the outside matches how I feel inside,” she explains.

For Naomi, the biggest change has been in how she views her body. As someone with a curvier body type, she used to compare herself to others, especially in dance, where many of her friends had a more typical ballerina physique. But since joining SHINE, Naomi has learned to embrace her body just as it is.

I used to sit in a certain way at the beach, constantly worrying about how I looked,” she recalls. “But now, I just sit and enjoy the moment. I wasn’t worried about how I looked. I was just having fun with my friends. That was a really freeing experience.”

The Aha Moment: Shifting the Mindset

Naomi’s transformation didn’t happen overnight, but there were key moments when she realized how much she had changed. One such moment came during a SHINE class when Naomi faced her fear of burpees.

My first SHINE class was Jess’s birthday class, and I hadn’t done a single burpee before that,” she shares. “But Jess encouraged me to try. And I did it. It was just one step at a time—just trying a slow one, then a tap out, and eventually, a full burpee. It was like, ‘Wow, I can do this.’ It was a huge shift for me.”

What Naomi didn’t realize at the time was that this mental block wasn’t just about burpees—it was a symbol of how she had been limiting herself in many aspects of her life. The mental shift she experienced with fitness has translated into other areas, like her teaching career. “I’ve learned that I can do hard things,” Naomi reflects. “Teaching is hard, but I’ve realized that I can handle it, just like I can handle difficult workouts. I’m able to push through because I’ve learned to trust myself.

Advice for Those Just Starting Their Journey

Naomi’s advice for anyone starting their fitness journey is simple: just show up. “It’s hard, and it’s okay to not have it all figured out. But if you just keep showing up, you’ll start to notice the change—especially in your mindset. It’s not about physical transformation. It’s about how you treat yourself and how you start to see yourself.

And for those struggling with perfectionism, Naomi’s message is clear: “You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to get it right every time. Just keep going, and you’ll surprise yourself with how far you’ve come.

Conclusion: Naomi's SHINE Story Continues

Naomi’s journey is a testament to the power of fitness to transform not just the body but the mind as well. Her story shows that it’s not about achieving perfection—it’s about showing up for yourself, embracing the process, and trusting that you are capable of more than you think. As Naomi continues her fitness journey, she’s not only inspiring herself but others in the SHINE community, proving that with a little self-compassion and perseverance, you can truly do hard things.
