Introduction

Welcome back to the SHINE Stories Show! I’m Jess Takimoto, the owner of SHINE, and today I’m thrilled to introduce you to one of our incredible instructors, Emma. She’s been with us for four amazing years and has truly become a leader in our community.

The goal of this show is to share real, inspiring stories from members and leaders like Emma to show that fitness is for everyone. No matter your size, shape, background, or experience, fitness can be a journey of self-love and confidence. So, let’s dive right in!

Meet Emma: The Road from Competitive Swimming to Medical School

Emma grew up in Brampton and Georgetown, where she was an avid competitive swimmer for 10 years. Fitness was always a part of her life, but it wasn’t until she entered university that she began to shift her relationship with her body. After completing her degree in Life Sciences at Queen’s University, Emma is now in her fourth year of medical school at U of T, and in just a few days, she’ll be finding out what type of doctor she’ll become. Exciting times ahead!

When it comes to fitness, Emma always enjoyed swimming, but she struggled with body image throughout her childhood. As a child, she was often self-conscious about being on the larger side compared to her peers. This led to a complex relationship with fitness, where it was as much about changing her body as it was about enjoying physical activity.

Fitness & Body Image: A Rocky Start

From a young age, Emma’s fitness routine was always tied to the idea of “changing her body,” often calculating how many calories she could eat based on how much exercise she did. But despite her love for swimming, the focus was always on how she could manipulate her body rather than simply enjoying movement for what it was.

This mindset shifted during her time at Queen’s, as she dove deeper into health studies and began learning more about the science of nutrition and healthy living. Emma’s relationship with fitness began to evolve. But it wasn’t until she started SHINE that she truly found a space where fitness wasn’t about appearance, but about feeling good, having fun, and connecting with others.

How SHINE Changed Emma’s Relationship with Fitness

Emma found SHINE during the pandemic. At the time, I was running virtual workouts, and she decided to give it a try. “I had never had so much fun working out in my life!” she recalls. “It was like going to the club and getting a workout in!” That moment marked the beginning of Emma’s transformation, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

The virtual workouts helped Emma get out of the house, relieve stress, and most importantly, enjoy moving her body without obsessing over how it looked. By the time Emma moved to Toronto and SHINE launched its studio, she was already hooked. It quickly became a major part of her routine, helping her manage the stress of medical school and providing a much-needed social outlet. Emma even found herself making friends through SHINE, something that was vital as she was new to the city and navigating the high-pressure world of med school.

The Confidence Shift: From Doubt to Instructor

Over time, Emma’s connection to SHINE deepened. When Abby, one of our other instructors, started teaching at SHINE, Emma was inspired. “I remember feeling like, ‘I can’t be an instructor. I’m still figuring this out myself.’ But Jess, you saw something in me. You noticed me considering it and encouraged me to go for it,” Emma says.

Despite her initial imposter syndrome and doubts, Emma applied and went through the SHINE instructor training. “After my first certification class, I was in tears thinking I had failed. But Jess reassured me and reminded me of all the things I did well,” Emma says. And since then, Emma hasn’t looked back. She’s now teaching classes and inspiring others to push through their own challenges, all while continuing her own journey of self-love and confidence.

The Power of Movement: How Fitness Transforms Your Body & Mind

As a medical student, Emma’s understanding of the science behind fitness has helped her appreciate just how powerful exercise is for both physical and mental health. “Exercise isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good,” she explains.

Research has shown that moderate-intensity exercise, like the classes at SHINE, can be as effective as taking antidepressants for treating mild to moderate depression. “Exercise helps regulate your stress hormones like cortisol, and it releases feel-good chemicals like serotonin, which is literally the same thing that antidepressants do,” Emma explains.

For Emma, working out regularly helps her release stress, improves her sleep, and boosts her overall mood. “I feel mentally clearer, less stressed, and more energized,” she says. Exercise not only helps your body feel stronger, but it also has the power to improve your mental health, boost your confidence, and allow you to truly enjoy life—both inside and outside the studio.

The Importance of a Supportive Community

Emma has found that SHINE offers something truly unique: a supportive, uplifting community. “What I love most about SHINE is the people,” she says. “It’s not just about getting a good workout in—it’s about being in a space where you can be yourself, have fun, and connect with others.

That community aspect is so important for Emma’s mental and emotional well-being, especially as a medical student juggling the pressures of school. “SHINE has given me a place where I can focus on something other than my stress. I get to work out, meet new people, and laugh with friends.

Advice for Anyone Starting Their Fitness Journey

Emma’s advice to someone just starting their fitness journey is simple: “Find something you love. Don’t force yourself to do something you don’t enjoy. When you love what you’re doing, you’ll stick with it.

She also encourages new members to dive into all the formats SHINE has to offer. “Try it all! You’ll find your favourites, and it’s all part of the fun. Just jump in, embrace the community, and remember, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about having fun and feeling good.

Emma’s SHINE Story: A Journey of Confidence and Transformation

Emma’s story is a powerful reminder that fitness is not just about how we look; it’s about how we feel. Through SHINE, Emma has transformed her body image, built her confidence, and found a supportive community that has become an integral part of her life. She’s learned to enjoy movement for its own sake, without focusing on the numbers or the scales, and now she’s helping others do the same as an instructor.

SHINE isn’t just about working out—it’s about discovering your own strength, embracing who you are, and connecting with a community that supports you. Emma’s journey is a testament to that, and we’re so lucky to have her as part of the SHINE family.
